How to use the generator
- Describe the board in Board Topic. Be specific about what you'll save to it: "no-bake summer desserts" or "small balcony garden ideas" gets much better names than "food" or "garden".
- Pick a tone. Neutral, Professional or Formal give plain, searchable names. Funny and Positive lean toward puns, which are fun to read but harder to find in search.
- Pick the language your audience searches in. English, Spanish, French, German or Italian. The names are written in that language, not translated afterwards.
- Generate and choose. You get 5 to 10 names, one per line. Pick the one that reads most like something a person would type into Pinterest search, and edit it if needed. Generate again for more options.
What Pinterest says about board names
- Pinterest's advice for businesses: "Give boards clear and descriptive titles such as 'Easy No-bake Dinners' to help with search" (How to create Pins).
- Boards show up in search too: "Give every board a proper title and description, as people can also discover boards in their search results" (Pinterest Business blog).
- Board titles and board descriptions are on Pinterest's list of places to include relevant keywords, next to Pin titles and descriptions (Pin performance and distribution).
- The board name appears under the board on your profile, and you can change the name and description at any time with Edit board (Edit a board).
Pinterest's help pages don't publish a character limit for board names. In practice, short names of two to five words are easier to read under a board cover and closer to what people search.
A simple formula
[What people search for] + [one qualifier], where the qualifier is who it's for, when, a style or a budget. "Easy No-bake Dinners" follows this exactly: "dinners" is the topic, "easy no-bake" narrows it.
| Weak name | Stronger name | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Yum! | Easy Weeknight Dinners | Says what's inside; nobody searches "yum" |
| Home Sweet Home | Small Living Room Ideas | A real search phrase instead of a saying that fits any home board |
| Wanderlust Wishes | Portugal Travel Itinerary | A specific place beats a mood; people plan trips by destination |
| My Style | Fall Outfits for Work | Season and occasion are how people search for outfits |
| Sew Awesome | Beginner Sewing Projects | The pun hides the topic; "beginner" tells people who it's for |
| Shop Favorites | Personalized Leather Dog Collars | For a shop, name the product type buyers look for |
Add a board description too
Pinterest recommends a title and a description on every board, but when you create a board it only asks for a name, so the description is easy to skip. Open the board, click the three dots next to its name, choose Edit board and add one or two plain sentences with a couple of related phrases. For "Easy Weeknight Dinners": "Quick dinner recipes for busy weeknights, including 30-minute meals, sheet pan dinners and one-pot pasta."
FAQ
Are cute or clever board names bad?
They're not banned, but they make it harder for people and Pinterest to tell what the board is about. If you love a playful name, keep the searchable words in it: "Sew Easy: Beginner Sewing Projects" still contains the phrase people type. Our guide to Pinterest board names goes into this with more examples by niche.
Is there a character limit for board names?
Pinterest doesn't state one in its help center. Aim for something you can read at a glance under the board cover on your profile.
Should I rename my existing boards?
If a board's name doesn't say what's in it, yes. You can edit a board's name and description at any time without recreating it. Leave boards that are already clear alone.
